“But then, after a while, I realized that it is necessary because when I tried to fix it, I spent a lot of money on the roof, and nothing happened. “I didn’t realize when he said that three years ago (how serious it was),” Patel said. Initially, Patel thought he could simply repair the building’s issues, particularly the roof, but it soon became obvious that that was not the case. “I asked the previous owner, and he said, ‘If I were you, I would tear it down, rebuild’,” Patel said. Over that time, he said, he has put a lot of time and money into attempting to repair and improve the building, to no avail. Patel has owned Smith’s Drug Store, located at 142 E Main St., and run the pharmacy within it for four years.

He explained the idea grew from there, and he ultimately decided that the proposed multi-use building would serve not only his business and his customers but also the downtown community. “I hate to do that, but functionality-wise for the pharmacy, and some issues like the maintenance and the roof and all that, considering all that, is why we made the decision.”

A lot of people have attachments (to the building), their old memories,” Patel said. “I hate to see breaking down this old building and redoing it. Smith’s Drugs has been serving Spartanburg for around 90 years or “three generations” of Spartanburg residents, as it was put during the project’s presentation at the Design Review Board meeting on May 1. Kuntal Patel, the owner of Smith’s Drug Store, is ready to start a new chapter in the business’s long history.
